STRENGTHS

• Kind - Long story short, Kyo is a nice guy and was raised to respect everyone he comes in contact with. Oftentimes, it pays to be nice and can often lead to making friends.
• Assertive - However, just because Kyo is nice does not mean you can walk all over him. He becomes aware of people who are trying to take advantage of him and while respectful, he can tell you if and when you need to back off.
• Respectful - Kyo was raised with the notion that people are to be respected. Even if they make decisions that you do not approve of, it is their life and life is one of the most precious gifts the Kami has given.
• Friendly - Kyo does all he can to approach things with a friendly demeanor. This ties to being kind and respectful to others, as he wants to be treated the same way.
• Generous tendencies - Kyo actually has very few friends but the ones the has, he's quite generous to. He will have no qualms giving you the shirt off his back if it's obvious you need it more than he does.
• He's got your back - If you are a friend of his, he's got you. Even if you've done something bad and maybe against the law, he will do everything in his power to protect you or cover for you.

WEAKNESSES

• Stubborn anger - While Kyo is quite good at controlling his emotions and while it is difficult to get him angry, if one ever gets him to this point, it's over. He is now a ticking time bomb and it is only a matter of time until someone gets hurt...
• Begrudging - Kyo has a lot of trouble letting go of past misdeeds done upon him, even if the other person swears up and down that they will never do it again. This even applies to close friends.
• Low self-esteem - Despite being quite adept at several things he does, he still somehow feels that he could do better. This is part of the reason why he downplays what he can do so that others do not expect so much from him. The reason for this trait is because of...
• Impostor Syndrome - Despite of, also, working hard for what he is able to do and has accomplished, a part of him feels like it's a fluke. That he could do more and accomplish more, even if these measurements to success are arbitrary. Of course, he is able to outwardly show appreciation and gratitude and means every onze of it. Perhaps this is because he feels that his older brother Yuji has accomplished so much and the fact that he's a ninja is in line with the clan and Kyo's an exception.
• Holding it all in - While Kyo is quite disciplined at keeping his emotions in check, he actually has a difficult time talking about deeper negative emotions like loss and disappointment and failure. He can never articulate his words properly, both in Hingan and in Eorzean common, in these situations.

Kyo was born as the second son of father Kiritani no Isshin and mother Kiritani no Rinon on the Second Sun of the Third Astral Moon, according to the Eorzean calendar. While the mother and father were not planning on having a second child, they did not want to leave their eldest son Yuji in solitude. In truth, Isshin also did not want Yuji to be completely dependent on him for companionship and wanted his children to be more socially adept.At an early age, it was discovered that Kyo had a talent for the magic arts and, like his mother, had an affinity for light magic. While Isshin trained the eldest son Yuji to be an assassin, Rinon trained Kyo to become an onmyoji and help give aid and support as he became more adept in it.Kyo was blessed with education from scholars and other teachers throughout Kugane, showing that he was quite adept in mathematical subjects, sciences, and of course aetherology.While growing up, Kyo would make frequent trips with his mother and a few other apprentices at the foothills of Daitenzan (and its surrounding five lakes) to practice their spellcasting and deepen their understanding of nature. His mother made it especially important for Kyo to learn and become adept in this art as he showed a great affinity for it.Aside from this, Kyo would develop an interest in performing arts. As a child, he would be accompanied by his mother to watch dramatic plays even if they contained many adult situations. In his late teens and early adult life, Kyo began performing at The Mujikoza. It was here where it was found that Kyo not only had a knack for acting but also for music. He was able to provide music while songstresses performed their songs.Due to the combined efforts of Isshin's and Rinon's parenting, both Yuji and Kyo grew up to be outstanding individuals within their community and are usually seen as kind, intelligent, respectful, approachable, friendly, and generous. They are well-liked by their peers and superiors. Both parents are rather proud of the two boys they've raised. While they continue their services to the Bakufu and for the greater good of Hingashi, Kyo and Yuji do have greater freedoms than usual since their father is still an active lord even if his influence is fairly minor in the grand scheme of things.

LIGHT MAGIC ARTS

In major contrast to his older brother Yuji, Kyo elected to make use of his abilities with the lifeforce (aetheric arts) and train as an onmyoji like his mother.What is different about the lifeforce magic that he practices, however, is that it favours no particular element and is not something that can be classified in a specific category. While he can cast protective and curative spells, he can also cause non-elemental astral-aspected damage to his foes. This practice is natively called Komadoshi. (光魔道士)While it can be closely compared to the forbidden and taboo practice of white magic, the smiting aspect of this practice is particularly effective against the undead and voidsent.Like other practices of aetheric arts around the world, however, the spellcaster still requires a focus and you may see him with a staff fashioned with some draconic wings on it.Because of his extended and extensive usage and practice of this art, Kyo developed an inherent ability to sense the presence of lifeforce. Of course, it has to be dense enough for him to detect it as if it were second nature. Additionally, he has gained understanding of how elements work so when he senses said lifeforce, he is able to determine what the element is and whether or not it is astrally or umbrally aspected.Nevertheless, Kyo has a habit of downplaying his abilities and never really shares much of what he is capable of doing. He will classify himself as a mender and will often come to someone's aid if they need it but that is the extent of how he'll speak of his own abilities.

A PATH TO THE DARK

OF THE DARK ARTS...

In major contrast to his most practiced and well-versed abilities, he came upon very unexpected powers. In a surveying task where he was to assist his older brother Yuji with, they discovered a peculiar-looking stone with pointed corners to it. Upon Kyo picking up the stone, it reacted to him and caused him to appear in dark armour while creating a duplicate of him. Though the other exhibited "darker features."As they both took off their helms, they were both Kyo in the flesh. The double was quite surprised that Kyo (the original) was able to keep his mental faculties in tact. The double spoke like Kyo, looked like Kyo, and even gestured like Kyo. However, it was clear to both (the original) Kyo and Yuji that was he was different. This is where they learned of the "dark side", as everyone has it. The only difference is that it was made manifest. Kyo's "dark side" was quite excited as he was able to control himself with no issue. Most, as they were told, would have succumbed to their dark side. To (the original) Kyo's surprise, Yuji had heard of this phenomenon with his intelligence-gathering.They later learned that this dark arts may have originated in the west. While it was natural for Kyo to be fearful of this, Yuji reminded him of all they have been taught and raised with. To never lose one's self, to be honest with one's self, all the while knowing and understanding their own emotions. A balance, as it were. Kyo was intrigued and wanted to keep the stone. Yuji hesitantly allowed him to but on the condition that he never activate these powers without him present. Yuji then vowed to never tell anyone else about this while Kyo vowed to never use these abilities in anyone else's presence other than Yuji's.In a way, having these abilities gives Kyo a sense of relief, as he had always wanted to be able to protect his family with more than just the spellcasting he is so very familiar with.Kyo later realizes that these dark powers do not respond to lifeforce the way that spellcasting does. He is unsure about the exact particulars of these powers but he has began to notice that they are fueled by negative emotion: anger, sadness, hatred, spite... Because of this, he makes sure he still has hold of his emotions and mental faculties while wielding these powers. These powers are not practiced very well and has not openly used them for these very reasons.

IN THE INTEREST OF...

TRAVEL

One of Kyo's other and bigger interests is to see the world. He is well-aware of Hingashi's isolationist policies and feels very fortunate that he lives in Kugane where he sees foreigners day in and day out unless assignments take him further inland and into Koshu. Meeting with other foreigners and hearing stories about their homelands just made him more curious about what else lies in the star.After enough convincing, his father allowed him leave to see the world with the condition that views the journey as a pilgrimage. Gather knowledge and truths about the world and to make sure to write as much as he possibly can. Accepting these terms, he immediately made plans after consulting with foreigners in Kugane and with his older brother Yuji. (Who also made him promise not to use his 'dark' powers while not at home.)Little does he know that he would learn about his "other" powers sooner or later...So far in his journey, he has been to Limsa Lominsa and the immediate La Noscea area, The Black Shroud, Gyr Abania, and Thanalan. He frequents Ul'dah since he sees many people who do not appear to be Ul'dahn and learns that travelers from many different places find their way here.

THEATRE

Of Kyo's other interests, one might be surprised to find him to be a member of The Mujikoza as an actor and performer. He has participated in several theatrical performances ranging from children's fairy tales and short stories to more intricate and adult-oriented dance-drama. (Kabuki)Thanks to his mother, Kyo was exposed to this environment at a young age. The training he received here would be instrumental in developing his talents and discipline as a light mage.

RUMOURS

• People who have seen him with the staff on his back assume the, as a Far Easterner, has a fascination for dragons.
• He once aided a group of adventurers with archery practice and people believe he has great aim.
• People with strong aethersight almost immediately assume he's a tabooed white mage. People who have a closer look then change their minds..?
• He supposedly isn't very fond of "horse birds" because of how unruly they have been in his presence.
• People in his homeland believe he has a high musical aptitude.
• Many people believe him when he tells them there isn't much to his abilities, especially those of healing and mending. But those with aethersight and anyone observant enough believe otherwise...
• An individual may have claimed to see him quite solemn in situations where great fires are involved...

HOOKS

• Are you or your clan a member of the Bakufu? You have perhaps heard of the Kiritani clan and you may have heard of its head (Isshin) or his children. (Yuji or Kyo) The Kiritani clan tend to stay away from the in-fighting that likely happens within it and only provides input to the Mitsurugi clan when prompted or asked.
• Have you watched a performance at The Mujikoza in Kugane? Perhaps you have seen Kyo on stage.
• Do you have a character who frequented Daitenzan? It's possible you've seen Kyo receive onmyoji training from his mother.
• Frequent visitors of The Shiokaze Holstery may have seen Kyo lending his assistance to their tenders. This is how he was able to meet many foreigners and speak to them of their experience.
• If your character frequents The Quicksand, you are likely to find Kyo there if he isn't already tending to something else. He likes to watch people to immerse himself in the culture and mannerisms. (Or lack thereof, oftentimes...)
• If you are knowledgeable about dragons, Kyo will likely want to talk to you.

If you have somehow made it this far, thank you for checking out this page for Kyo. A lot of this was created keeping in mind some parallels between Hingashi and real-life Japan. While the clan itself isn't indicative of an existing clan back in Japan's Sengoku-era, I believe this is a decent attempt at replicating what a clan would be like.Anyway, I am a filthy casual player who likes to level and run content and, of course, roleplay. The adventurer plate should provide a general idea of my attendance in this game. I am in the Pacific time zone of the US (GMT -8) and am usually on during the evenings on most days. If I am on Kyo and the RP icon is on, please don't hesitate to walk-up. They are my favourite part of RPing. You can also send me a /tell if you're more comfortable with that.I would also prefer that you and your character are at least the age of 18 if you'd like to RP, especially when we start to deal with more adult situations. For clarity, I am quite past this age.

FAVOURED

I am down to write most types of RP but I tend to gravitate towards adventure, slice of life, mystery, combat, and I indulge in some dark themes every now and again. I am okay with one-off and long-term RP.I'm also okay with romance and erotic topics as long as our characters have established a deeper connection than just a meeting here and there, and it isn't the only thing driving our RP. As it stands, it is fairly difficult to become a romantic partner to Kyo since there is a tidbit in his story that is not mentioned here.

AVOIDED

The things I'm about to mention here should not even have to be said since I believe this to be common sense. But here they are, anyway. Situations like death, dismemberment, metagaming, doing other things that require OOC permission when it is not obtained, and other basic stuff that should be considered a big fat NO. If you aren't sure about anything, please ask. I like to think I'm fairly approachable and open-minded. I try not to mince words and be honest.
